Overview:
Bike and Build is breaking new ground this summer with the brand-new Boston to Santa Barbara (B2SB) route. From the history of the Northeast to the majesty of the Southwest, this route showcases a breadth of American history, culture, and terrain. The 2008 Boston to Santa Barbara ride is dedicated to the memory of Chris Webber (NUS '05), former Bike and Build program director. The ride will pass through his home town of Andover, MA, and his alma mater of Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY. Return to top. Route:
After an Orientation in Boston, MA, the B2SB route heads west across the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts and the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania, interrupted by a day-long ride along the Hudson River. Upon leaving Pittsburg, the trip continues across the rolling hills of Ohio and vast open spaces of Indiana and Illinois, crossing the Mississippi river at St. Louis, Missouri. We then turn south west, paralleling the classic US Route 66 through Oklahoma and Texas. As the terrain transforms from plains to desert, we visit Tulsa, OK, Amarillo, TX, Roswell, NM, and Flagstaff, AZ en route to the Grand Canyon's south rim. We then cross the Hoover Dam into Las Vegas, NV, and ride across the Mojave Desert to the rugged cliffs of the California coast, finishing in Santa Barbara, CA. This is a truly breathtaking route that takes a slightly unconventional route.
Beneficiaries:
There is a dearth of affordable housing in all parts of the United States today. To address this issue, the Boston to Santa Barbara trip is doing more builds in more cities across the U.S. Though the two primary benefactors of the trip will be in the Boston and Columbus areas, we will be building in six additional areas of the country, and donating additional proceeds to youth-oriented affordable housing projects.
