Boston to Santa Barbara

Overview:

The summer of 2010 will be Boston to Santa Barbara’s (B2SB) third year of operation. From the quiet backcountry roads of the Northeast to the majesty of the Southwest, this route showcases a breadth of American history, culture, and terrain. This is a truly breathtaking route that winds its way across the country to impact cities and regions formally untouched by Bike & Build’s other routes. The Boston to Santa Barbara ride is dedicated to the memory of Chris Webber (NUS '05), former Bike and Build program director and beloved friend to the organization. The ride will pass through his home town of Andover, MA, and his alma mater of Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY.

Important 2010 End of Trip Information:

Riders will cross into Santa Barbara Tuesday, August 24th, 2010. Following the wheel dip ceremony, Bike & Build will host a reception and celebration for all the 2010 riders and well wishers. More information about the celebration and a request for planning volunteers will be sent to enrolled riders in the coming months. Riders will have accommodations provided for them the night of August 24th and August 25th, and are asked to make their own arrangements starting at noon on August 26th. Flight options from Santa Barbara are limited (or expensive), but in the past many riders have used the Santa Barbara Airbus , which runs from downtown Santa Barbara to Los Angeles Airport (LAX). Bike & Build is unable to assist riders in returning to Los Angeles.

Route:

After a two day Orientation held just outside of Boston, MA, the B2SB route heads west across the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts and the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania, interrupted by a day-long ride along the Hudson River. Upon leaving Pittsburg, the trip continues across the rolling hills of Ohio and vast open spaces of Indiana and Illinois, crossing the Mississippi river in St. Louis, Missouri. At the end of week four the route turns southwest to parallel classic US Route 66 through Oklahoma and Texas. As the terrain transforms from plains to desert, riders will literally be, as The Eagles sang, “standing on the corner of Winslow, AZ…” Pie Town, NM, voted one of the top three overnight locations by last year’s crew, will see riders cross the continental divide, as well as indulge in copious amounts of the local delicacy.

Tulsa, OK, Amarillo, TX, Roswell, NM, and Flagstaff, AZ are all stops en route to the Grand Canyon's south rim. The last week of the trip says goodbye to the Mojave Desert, as California’s border gives way to rugged cliffs, beautiful vineyards, and finally the beautiful coast of Santa Barbara, CA.
