Overview:
Bike & Build joins the response effort in the Gulf Coast on its newly routed Southern United States trip (SUS) for the summer of 2006. After the first 7 days of riding you will spends the second week building with the Slidell Habitat for Humanity in the Katrina devastated landscape of Saint Tammany County. From there you continue your trek west onto the ranges of Northern Texas, the deserts of the South West and, eventually, the coast of Northern California.

Route:

After a Build Day in Atlantic Beach with the Beaches Habitat for Humanity you head west. Beginning on the coast of Northern Florida in Jacksonville you will traverse the panhandle of Florida. You then dip into Mississippi for a day before crossing into Louisiana and spending a week in Slidell (across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans). From there you set off into the Wild Wild West, traversing another panhandle (that of Texas) and climbing into the mountains of New Mexico. After enjoying a day off in the northern rim of the Grand Canyon you will set off into the deserts of Nevada. Next is majestic Northern California with its rolling hills and scenic vineyards before arriving at your final destination, across the Golden Gate Bridge, in the bay of San Francisco.

Beneficiaries:

The trip's proceeds will be split between affordable housing organizations the riders work with during their build days in the Gulf Region. We are pleased to be helping a region in such need. Though now, largely out of the national press spotlight, this area is in dire need of both volunteers and support and we are all very satisfied to know that our efforts are contributing to a need so great.
