What is the Bike & Build Grant Program? The Bike & Build Grant Program is a competitive application process through which the proceeds from our events are distributed to affordable housing groups throughout the country. Grants are restricted to finance projects championed by students and young adults, ages 18-25.
How will this program affect the contributions Bike & Build makes to en-route housing groups? The Grant Program will not affect Bike & Build's practice of making small contributions to affordable housing groups in the towns and cities that our events pass through. Our organization will continue to make these donations in honor of the groups that host our cyclists.
What projects has Bike & Build funded through this program? In 2010, Bike & Build distributed $92,000 to 49 organizations through our competitive grant program, and we aim to distribute at least $100,000 for 2011.
Who can I contact with questions about this program? Questions or comments concerning the Grant Program should be sent to

What types of projects are eligible to receive grants?
Bike & Build welcomes all housing groups and service organizations to submit a grant application for consideration. Our program aims to mobilize young adults to affect the affordable housing cause -- we welcome applications for established programs, as well as those for innovative and non-traditional projects.
Bike & Build requires grant applications for projects:
Applicants must have current 501(c) (3) status at the time of submission. Documentation required.
Grant requests must be between $500 and $10,000.
The project must substantially involve and engage young adults (planning, implementation, etc).
Applications must come from strong and active organizations; Bike & Build will not fund proposals from individuals.
Applicants must request funds that impact affordable housing on a local, regional, or national level.
How are funding decisions made? Who makes these decisions? Funding decisions will be made by the members of Bike & Build's events, who will be instructed to make their choices according to prescribed criteria. As members of our funding committee, Bike & Build participants are stewards of the money they raise for our organization, and stakeholders in the allocation process.
Does my organization have to build with Bike & Build to be eligible to apply for a grant? No, you do NOT need to sponsor a build to apply for a Bike & Build competitive grant. These grants are open to all affordable housing organizations.
When are applications due? Applications are due by Friday, June 10th 2011. Please see our timeline of important dates.
