As you would expect, the CWM Ride will be very much like your regular B&B trip in many regards. On that same token, due to the nature of the trip some things will be inherently different. Hopefully this FAQ will help clarify things.
When does registration open?!?!? The afternoon of Tuesday, October 20th!
How do I register? Login to the B&B website (www.bikeandbuild.org/login.php) with your username and password from you last trip (shoot me an e-mail if you forget it). You should see an option on the left side that says “Apply for CWM.” Click this and submit the form. Make sure you have your most recent COMPLETED route selected from the list at the top of the screen otherwise the option won't appear. PLEASE NOTE--- YOU ARE NOT GUARANTEED A SPOT UNTIL YOU HEAR BACK FROM THE OFFICE. DO NOT BUY PLANE TICKETS, ETC UNTIL YOU HAVE CONFIRMED YOUR ENROLLMENT IN THE EVENT. Registration starts on Tuesday, 10/20 and we’ll start enrolling people the following Monday, 10/26. Last year’s trip was full, and we expect this year to be at capacity as well. If we have more registrations than spots we will go to a lottery system.
How much does it cost? The total is $375. You pay the first $100 as an application fee to guarantee your spot, and then you need to come up with another $275 by December 1st. If you do not have the full $375 in by then your spot will be given to the next person on the waiting list and your application fee will be considered a donation to the CW Fund.
What are the dates & mileages? Remember, these are subject to change. Checkout the official CWM page for most up to date info. 12/28 Orlando - "Re-orientation" 12/29 Cocoa Beach 60 12/30 Ft Pierce 70 12/31 West Palm Beach 65 01/1 Ft Lauderdale 46 01/2 BUILD DAY
We will also provide accommodations on the night of December 27th as well as January 2nd to give you more flexibility scheduling transportation.
Why is the trip only open to alumni? There are two main reasons. First, JanPlan was traditionally a time for alumni to reunite and work together towards a common goal while reminiscing about their B&B experiences. Additionally, due to the shortened nature of the trip it is simply impossible to dedicate the same amount of time to orientation and pre-trip training. By offering spots only to past participants, people come in with experience both on the bike as well as on a Bike & Build trip in general.
So this is like a mini Bike & Build? Yes, exactly. Church floors, potluck dinners, PB&J etc. Everything you loved about your trip in a fraction of the time.
Who drives the van? To be technical, nobody. In order to save costs, B&B will not be driving a van and trailer to Florida. Instead, we will be renting a U-Haul moving truck that will act as the SAG wagon from Orlando to Ft Lauderdale. Driving duties will be split between trip coordinators and staff.
How do I get my bike there? The best way is to fly with it or to ship it to Florida (we are currently in the process of finding a suitable host/shipping destination for Orlando). Unlike summer trips, we will not be in charge of securing bike boxes after the trip is over. All boxes that bikes are shipped to FL in will be broken down and travel in the truck the duration of the trip. We will provide more info regarding bike shipping once we finalize an Orlando host.
How do I get to and from the airport? Since there will NOT be a van to run shuttle service, each participant is on their own for transportation to and from the ride. It is strongly encouraged that everyone makes use of the forthcoming Listserv or Facebook group to help coordinate rides. Also, both Orlando & Ft Lauderdale were picked in large part because of their proximity to high traffic airports, which means that finding an inexpensive flight shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
Are there rules or policies that I need to follow during the ride? All rules and policies that currently exist for summer long trips will be in place for the ride. A list of these will be sent to you prior to your arrival.
Does that mean I need to wear my Bike & Build jersey? Of course! Is your jersey MIA? Simply want a very stylish new one? Discounted 2008 and 2009 season jerseys will be on sale for anybody who needs one. They are absolutely amazing, the best jerseys in B&B history – full zip Hincapie with a great design. Please let the office know ahead of time if you need/want to purchase a new jersey, they are on special for $30 (2008) and $35 (2009) for CWM riders. We also have some sweet shorts available!
Will Bike & Build supply me with a Thermarest? No, we will not be supplying Thermarests. You will either need to bring your own or rough it for a few days. Alternatively, we have brand-new ones which are available for $35.
Wow! This FAQ looks a lot like the one you sent out last year (and the year before!). Did you just copy and paste it and make slight updates? Maybe.
