July 28 - Updated Information regarding Paige Hicks

Paige Hicks
6/5/89-7/20/10

It is with deep sorrow that we report the death of Paige Hicks.  Paige, a Trip Leader on the 2010 Providence to Seattle program, was struck by a vehicle and killed yesterday while on a Bike & Build trip in South Dakota.

On behalf of the entire Bike & Build community, our thoughts and prayers go out to Paige’s family.  We all are shocked and saddened by these events.  Paige was a committed member of Bike & Build, and was participating in her second Bike & Build trip; she completed the Providence to San Francisco program in 2009.  Paige’s dedication to our organization and affordable housing partners, her friendship and fellowship with members of our community, and her enthusiasm for and love of life were all qualities which endeared Paige to our community and which we will  dearly miss.

Bike & Build’s priorities in the aftermath of this tragedy will be to support and work with the Hicks family according to their needs, comfort and support the members of the P2S trip, communicate the news and our response to the Bike & Build community, and understand the circumstances of the accident.  We intend to share as much information about our response as is possible and appropriate.

Thank you for your tremendously kind, thoughtful, and generous responses over the last couple of days.  The thoughts, messages, and actions we have seen are a comfort to Paige’s family, the P2S team, our organization, and the greater Bike & Build community.  The outpouring of support has reminded us the strength and character of this amazing group.

The letter below is an update with further information regarding the response of Paige’s family and our organization.

The past week has been a trying time for everyone, and the shared grief of this tragedy will not soon be forgotten.  The services in St. Louis were a powerful testament to the vivaciousness of Paige’s personality, and the stories and memories shared were a touching tribute to a person who meant so much to so many.  Paige was an amazing individual and it was moving to see the positive impact she was able to make in such a short time.   We continue to offer our sympathy to Paige’s entire family and keep them in our thoughts.

Although it is certainly hard to find any good in this situation, the overwhelming amount of support from alumni, friends, family, hosts and everyone else in the community is a powerful testament to the positive impact our organization has had on so many different people over the years.  We remain committed to what originally brought us together in the first place and to continue to do what we do.  We will move forward, and we will ride for Paige.
