In the beginning...

Well, today's the day! Thursday June 11th, the first day of Bike and Build orientation! My bags are packed, my bike is ready to be loaded into our car, and I'm finishing up last minute details. I can't wait for the adventure to begin!

Now its just a countdown until Sunday, our first official day of biking...

Fellow Providence to Seattle rider, Isabel, had the unfortunate luck of hitting a nasty rock on the shoulder of Rt. 28 in New Hampshire on a training ride last week. At least 3 car salesmen offered their assistance as we patched her tire and changed her tube. They were probably lured over by the best bike jersey-arm warmer combo ever seen by man.

Beth's bio:

Hello everyone! I am currently an undergraduate at Boston University finishing up with a degree in conservation biology in May 2009. I recently returned from a travel abroad experience in Tanzania and one of the most unexpected (but very welcome!) outcomes of that trip was the development of an intense desire to see more of my own country. I have seen a good deal of the northeast, and some of the Pacific coast, but the interior of the United States is largely foreign to me. Bike and Build is an incredible way to explore a transect of the country at a very personal level while also contributing time and manpower to the increasingly important issue of affordable housing. While I have never had deep-seeded aspirations to bike across the country, the moment I read about this organization, my goal was set. It is an intense physical challenge and adventure that I am thrilled to have and share with so many other enthusiastic riders. I use my bike everyday for transportation all over the lovely city of Boston and the surrounding area, and I can think of no greater challenge/adventure/dream experience than to bike across country. Although I've never raced or consistently gone on long cycling outings, I'm planning on competing in a triathlon in the spring and my general cycling knowledge is improving every day. My involvement in community service work has never been as significant as I would like, and this program is a great opportunity for me to get involved with a cause that demands attention in these economically trying times. This truly global issue is one I would like to come to comprehend more intimately, and there is no better way to do that than to interact with those who are in need, and dedicate time and physical strength to helping improve their lives. As for where I?ve been and where I?m going, I have always been a team sports person, playing soccer, softball and basketball in high school and rugby in college. I studied wildlife management while abroad in Tanzania and was lucky to have a chance to climb Kilimanjaro before we returned home. I have worked as an EMT in the Boston area for over a year, and plan to apply to the Peace Corps next year. But first, our trip from Providence to Seattle will be the next big adventure! I am looking forward to meeting everyone very soon!
