Kathryn's bio:

Hello! I'm Kathryn. I grew up in a very small farming community in Oklahoma called Waukomis…truly the heartland of America. Living in such a small place has given me a strong sense of community and a realization that there’s no substitute for growing up in a town where you know everyone and everyone knows you. Although I appreciate the cooperative spirit and familiarity of my hometown, I wanted to experience a new culture after I graduated from high school.

My need to try something new brought me to Norman, OK where I now attend the University of Oklahoma as an accounting major. A self-proclaimed “accounting nerd,” I have enjoyed my classes and was recently accepted in the graduate accounting program at OU. Clearly, I love what I do. I have also been awarded an internship with the firm of KPMG in Oklahoma City for the 2010 spring semester. Eventually, I hope to obtain a position as a tax accountant in a large, reputable firm when I graduate.

Throughout high school and college, I’ve always been involved with community service. From coaching peewee basketball and softball to working with Relay for Life to boxing frozen french fries at the food bank, I enjoy just about any type of project that will benefit people in need. I have always heard wonderful stories about Habitat for Humanity, but have not had many opportunities to work on a home. I believe Bike & Build would be the perfect way for me to join such a great organization and inspire me to remain involved long after the ride comes to an end.

When I manage to find some time away from school and work, I like to get outdoors for hiking or camping trips. I love going to concerts and just about anything to do with music. I’m also a bit of a photography enthusiast. I can’t wait to take one of the cliché Bike & Build hay bale pictures!

I found out about Bike & Build from a friend of mine who participated last summer. After hearing about his experience, I knew I needed to be a part of one of the riding teams. What a wonderful opportunity to be a part of a worthwhile cause and see the country all at the same time! So far, my travel experiences have been somewhat limited, so the prospect of seeing the United States from the seat of a bicycle is almost indescribable. It’s daunting to think about pedaling 4000 miles, but I love a challenge, and I am eager to take on this one

I’m so excited to start this adventure. Seeing our beautiful country from coast to coast, taking in the scenery, people and culture while giving back to the community at the same time is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Summer can’t get here fast enough!
