¡Hola!
As you probably gathered, my name's Kevin and by the time you read this I'll be a 22 year old person. I’ll have also, barring any unforeseen problems, graduated from New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies with a major in Art History and a minor in Studio Arts. If you guessed that I have an interest in the arts, you’d have guessed right! What I’ll be doing outside of graduating from college is really a mystery right now. I’ve applied for the Peace Corps and hopefully hear something back from them soon, but who knows.
So two years ago a close friend of mine called me and asked me to 'boom' for documentary final. I had no idea what this actually meant, but agreed to help. It involved recording sound for her. It was tough work, but it needed to be done (otherwise she wouldn’t have sound, which is quite important in a movie). Regardless, her documentary was about two kids who went on a cycling trip to raise awareness on affordable housing. It was called Bike and Build and it intrigued me. The year after, that same friend chose to join Bike and Build herself. When she came back she couldn't stop talking about it. From hearing what a fantastic time that she had and all the good work that had come from it, it made me want to contribute that much more. Which brings me to this moment and my applying for Bike and Build….
I've volunteered for a few organizations here and there beforehand, most notably for Habitat for Humanity. I went with a small group to Oak Ridge, TN (which is a really small town with a fantastic history, which you should really look up). I know I didn’t change the world or anything, but as a group I like to think that we made a difference in some peoples’ lives, whether that change is big or small. It was an incredibly rewarding experience, and it made me want to do more. Bike and Build is that more. By pledging to cycle across country we’ll all undoubtedly raise questions from the people who’ll see us, hear about us and sponsor us. Hopefully they’ll ask who we are and why we would be doing something as crazy as this. This conversation is needed to raise awareness for affordable housing. We all know this is a problem, but it’s rarely acknowledged.
As far as actually cycling cross-country goes, I couldn’t be more excited! I would like to say that I’m a fairly active person and I’m always up for a challenge and this would definitely count as a challenge. I love nothing more than pushing myself to do just a little extra. And, to be honest here, I have never been further west than Columbus Ohio for a Tom Waits concert (which was awesome by the way). There’s so much more to see than what I’ve seen, and there’s so much more I can do to help. Bike and Build is just the first step.
