Hi Everyone!
My name is Susan Sourinho. I am 23 years old and originally from Murfreesboro, TN. I am a recent graduate of Middle Tennessee State University. Most recently, I have been taking additional classes in preparation for nursing school. When I am not working or at school I enjoy biking, jogging, hiking, scrapbooking, and most importantly spending time with my family.
I started biking in 2007 when I decided to join Team in Training for the 3 State 3 Mountain Challenge. This was my first time getting on a bike since I was a little girl. It was quite scary at first, but I soon discovered my love for it--especially when going down a big hill. It was nice knowing that I was doing something I enjoyed while at the same time helping others. After becoming aware of Bike and Build, I could not help becoming excited at the thought of getting involved.
In the past, I have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity through school. I found it to be a new and rewarding experience. The job required a lot of self discipline and hard work. At first, I questioned whether I was up to the challenge at hand. However, once I saw the results of our collective hard work, it was very satisfying. I had given my effort and had been rewarded with the knowledge that I had been part of helping a family in need that would not have otherwise had shelter. During fall break in my first semester of college I went with a group of about 10 students to Atlanta to help with the homeless. During that time I also saw that some people did not have a roof over their heads. I have been so lucky to have a warm and safe place to call home; I just want to give back in some way.
One thing that intrigues me about Bike and Build is the travel involved. I have always wanted to see some new and interesting places, but thus far have not had much opportunity. I feel I am ready for the challenge which results when a person exits their comfort zone and opens themselves up to new and different locations and experiences. I am excited about the prospect of taking a break from both school and work and the possibility of doing some of the things I enjoy while finding new ways to give back and help others. I am excited about meeting everyone!!!
