Hi everyone. My name is Katelyn and I am 22 years old. I just graduated from UC Davis this past June with a degree in Biopsychology. I had a hard time settling into the traditional post-collegiate job hunt pretty quickly and decided to look into any sort of off the wall experience. I am extremely passionate about traveling, meeting unique people, learning in any way I can, and most importantly...cooking. Which has led me to McMurdo Station, Antarctica where I am a cook for the researchers of the National Science Foundation. Not quite what I expected either, but it continues to be an interesting and challenging experience, much like my hopes for our Bike and Build adventure.
I have not had any direct experience with issues pertaining to affordable housing but through other community service projects, I have been forced to examine the struggle to choose between dinner or a roof over your head. I have reconsidered many of the projects I have particpated in and wondered if food drives and science camps would have the same impact if these people did not have a place to call home at the end of the day. I've worked extensively with young children throughout my life and believe that an essential component to their safe upbringing is a home. I hope that I can not only leave a lasting impact on the communities and organizations we meet over our journey, but also lead other young people through example to get involved with an issue that many of us take for granted everyday.
I heard about Bike and Build like I've heard about so many things, through Facebook, and was amazed that someone could complete such a trek and manage to throw in some occasional house-building on the side. I was then completely inspired to see that hundreds of young people had made the same journey as well. I knew that if they could do it, I might be able to as well. I've played water polo for 8 years now (even if my swim options seem rather limited now) and spent the last 4 years biking all over the beautiful town of Davis. Although I am a little nervous to be careening down the Rocky Mountains on two wheels, I believe that biking is the best way to get a sense of a place. Being a West Coast girl, I've yet to see most of the East Coast, and a lot in between, so I can't wait to learn about and meet people from all over the country.
