My name is Sarah Whitehurst. Unfortunately, I am still stuck in my teens, but come March I will be starting on my 20s! I was born and raised in the amazing city of Austin, Texas. I am currently living in Denton, Texas (right outside of Dallas) while attending the University of North Texas. I am getting my major in history with minors in education and French. My hope is to one day use my degree to become a teacher in an international school anywhere outside of the U.S. In middle school and high school I rode horses, mainly focusing on hunter jumper. The summer after my senior year in high school, a friend of mine got me addicted to biking and since then I have not been able to stop. I decided to put this new hobby to good use by joining the UNT triathlon team and teaching the spin class at my university’s recreation center. I heard about Bike and Build through a family friend who rode the Northern U.S. route a few years ago. After I heard about this program I became determined to ride at least one of the Bike and Build routes in my life so I could say that I have biked across the U.S.
I have to admit, I have absolutely no experience with affordable housing projects, or tools for that matter. Well, that is not entirely true; I built a stool once. Just three pieces of wood, some nails, and a hammer; sounds easy enough, but somehow I managed to make it lopsided.
Even though I am a bit nervous about the Build aspect, my excitement for the Bike cancels out all of my inhibitions. There are so many states that I have not seen and I cannot think of a better way to visit them than on a bike. I went to Colorado with some friends a few years ago for a skiing trip and fell in love with the state. To be able bike through the Rockies will be the highlight of my life. I am also very excited to finally visit Oregon.
