Hello out there, my name is Brooke Organ, I am 22 years old, and I'm a brand new alumnus of the University of Florida. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology and will begin medical school this fall. I have lived in many places including Berlin, Germany; Arkansas; and North Carolina; but I claim home in the 813: Tampa, Florida. I moved back to Tampa and am currently living with my parents (cool, I know) while I take the year off to do awesome things I may not have a chance to after this year, like ride for Bike & Build.
I am a fool for sports. I will play anything, but I'm particularly fond of tennis, soccer, flag football, and softball. I also love water sports like wakeboarding and tubing. For all my athletic endeavors, I have never ridden a bicycle farther than across campus and back, so hopefully I'll be capable by the time we take off.
I heard about Bike & Build from my friend Brent Finklea when he told me he was riding two summers ago. I was instantly intrigued and new it was something I wanted to do as soon as I had the chance...and here we are.
The affordable housing cause is important to me because when you break it down, the two most basic things people need to survive are food in their belly and a roof over their head, and there are so many who lack either or both of those things. In 2006, the Department of Children and Families estimated that on any given day in Florida, 85,907 individuals were homeless (that's more than twice the average daily attendance at Walt Disney World!). I am very blessed to have never known such epic struggles, and I feel it is important to use my good fortune to help others find theirs. I worked with Habitat for Humanity in Gainesville while I was in school, and will continue to work with them here in Tampa before the trip starts. My volunteer experiences outside of AH include:
I am so stoked to take this ride. Ever since I saw Forrest Gump, and the part where he runs for 3 years, 2 months, 14 days and 16 hours, I knew one day I would take a trip from one ocean to the other. There is so much of America I haven't seen, and I can't wait to spend ten weeks getting to know the greatest country on the planet better. I am nervous about riding up hills til my quads fall off, but I will keep telling myself...for every ride up, there must come a coast back down.
I can't wait to meet everyone and make this epic journey together. Until then, please enjoy the following miscellaneous fun facts about me:
