Hi! My name is Lance Nissley and I am currently a senior at Penn State. I am a science major with a minor in international studies and am planning on going to med school after completing my undergraduate studies. I would like to participate in Bike & Build for various reasons. For one, I am very interested in the challenge that biking across the country will offer and I look forward to working through it and having a lot of fun doing something that few people can claim as an accomplishment. I enjoy traveling and I think that this is a different and interesting approach to seeing the United States.
Bike & Build as an organization first appealed to me because it is an organization that provides a dynamic way to raise money for a good cause and I am more than willing to raise money for the program. I have worked construction for the summers that I've been in college so I think that this is an interesting way for me to give back to the community with a skill that I already possess. I have grown up living on a farm and have a special interest for the outdoors and participating in various adventure sports like skiing, hiking, and rowing so I think that I will very much enjoy doing a trip like this. I have been on the Penn State crew team for a year now, and I love the workout that it offers and the challenge of learning a sport that few people get the chance to participate in so this kind of trip is right down my ally. Biking across the nation is just one more way for me to push myself to new limits to try new things.
I have never worked for an affordable housing group before but I have been on various mission and humanitarian projects in Kenya, Bolivia, Ukraine, and other locations within the United States so I am always looking for another opportunity to volunteer my time and skills when I can. I am planning on going to med school next year so I would like to take this opportunity to take a summer off as this might not be an option in the future.
