Melissa's bio:

I have long had the desire to explore the country from east to west coast. Though doing so by bike...hardly crossed my mind!  I welcome the challenge of this physically demanding adventure and the inspiration that may awaken something within me.  I am from Erie, PA, and attend Allegheny College where this May I will graduate with a degree in Studio Art and Psychology.  My undergraduate years have been focused upon both personal and academic growth in many senses.  Now I feel compelled to direct my efforts to further exploration of my environment, self and everything from South Carolina to Santa Cruz!  I believe a great way of doing this is through giving to others and pushing the dimensions of my character with something as intense as Bike and Build and issues of affordable housing along our journey.

I have been involved in many enriching groups and activities such as AmeriCorps through the Bonner Program, a nationwide Foundation in college campuses built upon service within the community.  As well as a 4 month journey to India, where I volunteered at a Non-government Organization called Ladli; a vocational training school, rehabilitation center and shelter for girls from the streets and slums.  Through the chronicles of my time abroad in India, my sense of being shifted in many ways.  I realize at my age, how fortunate I am to have had transformational experiences leading to such a discovery, which has prompted me to respond through social action.  In the months since my return, I have invested in various service experiences and organizations which has really shaped my mindset.  Through service I have gained a sense of how an idea can spark change and ignite transformation, which is echoed throughout the initiative of the Bike and Build program.

As a Bike and Builder, I anticipate that at times, my experience will be both challenging and discomforting.  I realize however, that these kinds of experiences are those that shape character and are most fulfilling to me.  This summer I will be a part of something purposeful and enlivening.  As an artist it will be exciting to explore our country’s pastoral landscapes, communities, issues, people, etc.  I am most looking forward to service, teh comradery, seeing America with my tires on the road, good conversation and adventure!  The months leading up to the journey will be exciting too; raising awareness, raising funds and training!
